英文法のなかで私にとって苦手分野なのがto不定詞でした。

不定詞の使い方は、わかっていると思っても体系立てて

学ばないとすぐに忘れてしまいます。

そこで出会ったのがALL IN ONE BASICの英文法です。

そこで、今回はto不定詞を習得するうえで、私にとって

もっともわかりやすい教材ALL IN ONE BASIC

の例文をつかって解説してみたいと思います。

不定詞には名詞的用法、形容詞的用法そして副詞的用法が

あります。このそれぞれの用法を把握しておくことで

不定詞攻略のカギとなると思っております。

to 不定詞の名詞的用法

S V to Vb.

S is to Vb.

To Vb is…..

it is … to Vb.

SV it …. to VB

To teach is to learn twice.

教えることは二度学ぶことである。

I forgot to reserve a table for tomorrow night.

明日の夜のテーブルを予約することを忘れた。

Remember to go over your paper for spelling errors

before you hand it in.

提出する前にスペル間違いを見直すことを覚えておいてください。

名詞用法の不定詞が最もよく使われるのは他動詞の目的語として

です。

①動名詞を取ることができない他動詞

want ,wish, aim, learn, refuse, plan, afford, pretend, happen,

would like, hope, attempt, agree, decline, decide, fail, threaten, appear,

would love, seek, manage, promise, mean, resolve, hesitate, bother, seem,

例文

We aim to pursue our ultimate goal of equal opportunities for minorities

at the expense of short term needs.

我々は短期的な要求は切り捨てて、最終目標である社会的少数派にとって

機会均等の実現を目指している。

In the face of overwhelming odds, the Imperial Navy managed to win the

decisive battle, thanks to the admiral’s skillful tactics.

圧倒的に不利な状況下、帝国海軍は艦隊司令長官の巧み戦術によって、重要な

戦いに何とか勝利をおさめた。

My duty is to ensure that the law is obeyed, so I am careful not to

overlook any trivial offense.

私の任務は法律が遵守されるようにすることです。ですからどんな些細な違反も

見逃さないようにしています。

②目的語に動名詞も不定詞も両方とることができ、どちらの場合も

ほぼ同じ意味になる。

like begin cease love start need hate continue intend

③目的語に動名詞も不定詞もとることができますが、意味が異なる

forget ,try, regret, remember

to不定詞の形容詞用法

形容詞用法は「名詞 to不定詞」の形で用います。

Vするための名詞、とかたVするための名詞　のような意味になります。

例文

The black population gave a shriek of delight when the former

prisoner became the first black person to be elected President

in South Africa.

かつてのその囚人が南アフリカの初の黒人大統領に選出された時

全国の黒人が歓喜の叫び声をあげた。

Tiger was the only player to finish under par.

タイガーはアンダーパーで競技を終えた唯一のプレイヤーだった。

The weakness of the UN was revealed in yet another futile attempt

to work out a peaceful solution to the regional warfare.

国連の弱点は、その地域紛争に対し、またしても平和的な解決方法を見出せなかった

ことで露呈された。

attempt to Vb  ～しようと試みる

＝＞形容詞的用法、attempt to Vb  Vしようとする試み

I have two infants to look after.

私には面倒をみなくてはならない幼児が2人いる。

I have no one to look after me.

私には私を世話してくれる人がいない。

Bring something to sit on.

何か座るものをもってきてください。

I have some urgent business to attend to

至急やらなきゃいけない仕事がある。

Municipal governments are independent of central government

in the selection of sites on which to build waste disposal centers.

地方自治体は中央政府と独立して、ごみ処理センターの建設場所選択を

している。

to不定詞の副詞的用法

動詞、形容詞、副詞、文全体のいずれかを修飾する場合

１）例文　目的

The man in black stopped to light a cigarette,

pondered for a second, then turned around and began

to trot in the opposite direction.

黒服の男はタバコを吸うために立ち止まり、次にしばらく考え込み

そして振り返り逆の方向に歩き始めた。

２）例文　結果

The traveler dozed off on a bench in the tranquil square.

After a while, he woke up to find that his luggage had vanished without

trace.

旅行者はのどかな広場のベンチでうとうとした。しばらくして

彼は起き上がり、跡形もなく荷物が消え去っていたことがわかった。

Longevity runs in my family: my great grandfather lived to be 102,

my grandfather is still active for a ma approaching 90,

and I have never fallen ill.

長寿は我が家の家系です。私の祖父母は１０２歳まで生き、おじいさんは

９０歳になろうとしているがまだ健在です。そして私は病気になった

ことがない

The locally organized rescue party set off at dawn in search of

missing hikers, only to come back empty handed at dusk.

レスキュー隊は夜明けとともに遭難中のハイカーを探しに出発したが

その結果夕暮れ時になんの成果もなくかえってきた。

秘書はいろいろある中でも、言語能力にほこりをもっている。彼女は

スペイン語、イタリア語そして言うまでもなく英語を流暢に話す。
